Fish and Bird Die-off at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park

September 1, 2016

Fish and Bird Die-off at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park

There is currently a fish and bird die-off in the Wasaga Beach area. Type E Botulism is suspected to be the cause of the die-off and it has been confirmed for one species, the ring-billed gull.
Small-scale fish and bird die-offs are common on the Great Lakes.

Please do not handle dead or dying fish or birds.  Park staff is aware of the problem and are working to dispose of dead fish and birds that are found within the park.

While visiting Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, please keep pets on a leash at all times and away from dead or dying animals. Beach Area 3 is the authorized pet beach area in the park.

Shoreline property owners and others can report dead or dying waterfowl to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781. To report fish die-offs, call the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry at 1-866-929-0994.

September 1 - Coffee & Learn

Mass Marketing Fraud and Cybercrime Awareness:

Location:  Waterside Retirement Lodge Inc., 239 Zoo Park Rd, Wasaga Beach
Time:  9:30 am to 11 am.

A presentation by the RCMP and the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre covering Mass Marketing Fraud, Identity Theft, Romance and other scams - and how to avoid them. Nearly 80 percent of mass marketing fraud is conducted by organized crime groups and is currently the second most common criminal activity funding terrorist activities.

The original presentation was developed by CAFC  Senior Unit Volunteer: Brock Godfrey, RCMP Corporal Lori MacDonald, and RCMP Constable Jennifer George.  It is now delivered by Brock, and where possible, by one of the OPP or RCMP partners to seniors groups, Service Clubs and Professional Organizations across Southern Ontario.  We also work with a number of
other Police Groups or individuals in Ontario and British Columbia.

This presentation will also emphasize the top scams targeting Businesses in Ontario as well as how to avoid them. We will also cover computer security for personal and business use.

Brock Godfrey took early retirement in 1993 from the Ontario Ministry of Education, after 30 years in education.  He joined PhoneBusters in 1997 as a Volunteer SeniorBuster.  He mainly gives presentations such as this to Service Clubs, |Retirees, Police, Seniors and Professional Groups, across all of Southern Ontario, and from Maui to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.

He received the Superintendent's Award of Distinction from the RCMP for his work in making presentations about this topic across the province.
