Fish and Bird Die-off at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park
Fish and Bird Die-off at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park
There is currently a fish and bird die-off in the Wasaga Beach area. Type E Botulism is suspected to be the cause of the die-off and it has been confirmed for one species, the ring-billed gull.
Small-scale fish and bird die-offs are common on the Great Lakes.
Please do not handle dead or dying fish or birds. Park staff is aware of the problem and are working to dispose of dead fish and birds that are found within the park.
While visiting Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, please keep pets on a leash at all times and away from dead or dying animals. Beach Area 3 is the authorized pet beach area in the park.
Shoreline property owners and others can report dead or dying waterfowl to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781. To report fish die-offs, call the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry at 1-866-929-0994.
